The move appears to be a way of embracing a wider range of voters

Far-right candidate Marine Le Pen has announced she is temporarily stepping down as leader of the Front National to concentrate on her presidential bid.

The move appears to be a way of embracing a wider range of voters ahead of her runoff against Emmanuel Macron.

She had previously said she is not a candidate of her party and the policy platform she stood was hers and not reflective of the Front National.

“Tonight, I am no longer the president of the National Front. I am the presidential candidate,” Ms Le Pen said on French public television news.

France 24 News – French police say they have foiled an imminent attack leading up to the presidential election, with the arrest of two men in Marseille on Tuesday. Explosives and multiple weapons were found at the suspects’ flat in the southern port city.

The two Frenchmen, one born in 1987 and the other in 1993, had met while sharing a prison cell and were known to police as having converted to radical Islam, Paris Prosecutor Francois Molins said at a press conference.
In addition to a machine gun and two handguns, Molins added that an Islamic State group flag was also found in the apartment where the two suspects were arrested, France 24 reported.
